Releasing ‘WEL-Cool® H2A’ a heat exchanger for hydrogen fuel stations

23/1/2015

Fully utilizing its diffusion bonding technology, WELCON Inc. (headquartered in Akiha-ku, Niigata-City, Niigata, Japan) has developed ‘WEL-Cool® H2A’, its original design heat exchanger for hydrogen fuel stations, and begun shipping its first generation model.

WELCON Inc. began marketing its heat exchangers for hydrogen fuel stations in 2013 projects.
WELCON produces both ‘After-coolers’ used for filling hydrogen tanks at hydrogen fuel stations and ‘Pre-coolers’ used for filling fuel cell vehicles (FCV).
Heat exchangers used in hydrogen fuel stations need concept to be highly tolerant of hydrogen exposure and to be able to withstand high pressures (approximately up to100MPa) for very long times while being compact, safe, and economical.
By creating its original design micro-channels using high nickel content 316L stainless steel ‘The High Pressure Gas Safety Institute of Japan’ specified material resilient to hydrogen embrittlement, WELCON Inc. succeeded in building heat exchangers that are vastly smaller and more efficient than current heat exchangers.WELCON’s micro channels can improve heat exchanger performance by up to 100 times in volume / performance ratio.WELCON heat exchangers can decrease the actual size of overall systems by 70% from systems currently in use at most hydrogen fuel stations.

Diffusion bonding is the technology that produces 3D(three-dimensional) structures by stacking preprocessed metal sheets and bonding them without melting.
Because bonding is done without melting, diffusion bonding is capable of forming channels (micro channels) as fine as capillaries, making a very large surface area within a small volume.
With its safe, compact and economical heat exchangers essential for building a hydrogen-energy based future society and for commercializing FCV, WELCON will continue to contribute to industry development.
